From the brewer

“La Petite Mort” means “a little death” in French. What’s a little death if it comes in this form? Well worth it we think. Released each July 14, Bastille day. This Belgian inspired strong abbey brown ale is brewed with a Belgian Ardennes yeast strain, and a generous three month cellar aging mellows and matures this fine ale. This additional time brings out flavors of dark fruit such as plums and raisins, deep caramel notes, and wonderful earthy tobacco tones.

Very strong yeasty herbal flavors. Strong yeast bitterness. Good booziness.
2015 release
Might be the best batch yet? Cherry, subtle clove, bit of chocolate on the finish.
2014 release
Fresh off the wheatwine, but this seemed better balanced than my memory of the 2013 when it was new. Subtle fruit, malt, Belgian spice come together in a strong beer.
2012 release
Smooth start and finish, no rough edges.
2012 release
Significantly better than the 2013 - more integrated, stronger malt profile. Really, really nice. I guess that extra year and a half makes a difference.
2013 release
I liked the draft version a lot more than the bottled one. The cherry is not as overbearing.
2013 release
Thick, sweet, malty, hints of cherry and most important of all, a pretty garnet colored brew. Pretty libations always taste better.

Out of the bottle there was a noticeable hazelnut quality to the fragrance and flavor. A little more enjoyable than on draft, although I still wasn't really won over.

Nice fragrance of Belgian spices, malt and gingerbread completely obliterated by a powerful, dry alcoholic sheen too strong to be balanced by a rather thin body. I bought a bottle of this so this will get a second chance.
