From the brewer

We first brewed this beast to honor the Pine Box boys and their iconic Seattle beer nirvana. We liked it too much to let it go away, so The First Nail returns. An oatmeal stout of epic proportions with brewer's licorice, smoked barley and aged on cinnamon bark. The Nail pounds your palate, challenges your perception of all that you've known of beer and leaves you wanting ... another sip. "A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thouroughly sure" -VWP.

Certainly the thickest beer I can remember drinking. There's a lot going on in this. First of all it's very sweet, almost syrupy. Strong roasted, malt flavors with more tamed licorice ones. Could not really taste the smoked barley though.

So thick and pungently sweet, a stout in the mold of a World Wide or maybe a non-barrel aged Berserker. Lots of molasses and spice: the anise there as a hint, the cinnamon more explicit. It's really good, but so in-your-face that some aging would probably much improve this.

So this would prolly be great if I hadn't just had two other beers that were better.

This is insanely sweet. Somewhere between brown sugar and soda syrup. It kind of tastes like cherry cough syrup.

Smooth, thick stout with no bitterness to speak of, and a touch of dried fruit but not what I would call sour at all. Just enough to give complexity to an already-excellent stout.
