From the brewer

La Mort Rouge is born from a marriage between La Petite Mort, our dark Belgian style strong ale, and red wine barrels from our friends at Efeste Winery in the Woodinville valley. In La Mort Rouge, we use multiple specialty malts to create a rich, complex beer and then balance that with red wine tannin from maturation in barrels. This vintage was aged for eight months in red wine barrels and then blended. Only 145 cases are produced each year.

2023 release
Delightful. Glad after a few disappointments that at least this one seems to have stayed the same as my memory. Caramel notes along with a ton of red wine flavor.
2018 release
Much less wine than I remember; this tasted more like a straight up dubbel or quad. Lots of caramel, some boozy notes. I did like it better the old way.
2015 release
With a one two punch of brown sugar and light wine notes, this is a hard hitting delightful beer. Worth seeking out.
2015 release
A lot lighter and less red tinge (and correspondingly less presence in the flavor) than on draft, unless my imagination is fooling me. It was still good but also a lot less distinctive this way.

2015 release
Nice maroon hue sets the tone. Tannic cab/zinf smell with stout qualities. Thin to medium body with some sugar tack at the end. Moderate tangy qualities.
Bottle
2015 release
Very appealing profound dark red color. Smells of red fruits and bubblegum. Presents light and pleasant wine flavors and sourness that marry pretty well with the stronger dark beer's roasty and yeasty flavors. Very enjoyable overall, but the bitterness of the beer gets unpleasant after a while.
2015 release
Opens with definite red wine flavors, a buttery tannic fruitiness that more than balances the base beer. Some bitter yeast funk that reminds me of the recent Raven de Garde release, and some nontrivial amount of banana and clove finish off the flavor. I liked it, but do admit the red wine and overt sweet Belgian was a weird combination that never quite stopped being weird.
2012 release
Strong red wine flavor, dry, not too much acid, with a good balance of malt and light carbonation. Over time it starts tasting more like port wine and the malt fades. Tasty and unusual.
2012 release
Smells clean and lightly fruity/wine. First taste is that of red wine, like a mild cabernet sauvignon. Finishes with the tang of wine. It's hard to get the beer aspects of it.
